TIP OF THE MONTH - FOOD AND EXERCISE DIARY
One of the main reasons for gaining weight is eating too much. Yes, we know this is obvious. But overeating without even realising it isn't always so obvious. Modern day life is full of temptations. "Treats" at every corner... cafe's, supermarkets, vending machines full of brightly packaged and tasty foods that make your day seem a little more exciting. It has become so bad that you can't even go to the local gardening store without being confronted with candy and chocolate at the checkout!
The little bits "here and there" really do add up. A taste of this, a bite of that... before you know it you've consumed hundreds of calories. Throw in modern day lifestyles where people are moving less than ever before - and no wonder the world is facing the obesity problem that it is!
That's why a food and exercise diary is so important if you're serious about losing weight. You need to know where you're going wrong if you want to work towards "going right".
The most important things to write down in your food and exercise diary are:
At first you might find it a hassle filling in your diary - but persevere - it is a very small sacrifice when you consider how much you have to gain from it. More health, more freedom, more energy...
After about a week of keeping your diary, you may notice that the amount you're consuming isn't justified by the amount you are exercising. You may also realise that the times you are most likely to binge eat, or reach for the cookie jar is when you're feeling tired or depressed... BUT, THAT'S OKAY! In fact it's great news...
Now you have an excellent starting point for making changes! You will learn how to identify the reasons you overeat or don't exercise. Despite what you may think - you are not just a "pig", neither are you just "lazy"... There are emotional and psychological reasons why you act the way you do. A food and exercise diary will help you become more aware of these reasons and begin to overcome them.
Once you have got the hang of your food diary, and grown aware of some of your personal eating and exercise habits... it's time to make a few changes. Set yourself very real and definite weight loss, fitness and emotional goals which you can work towards. Make sure that you write them down at the front of your diary and read over them at the beginning of each day - or when you're feeling tempted to stray.
Months down the track you may look at your first entries into your food diary. You will most likely be amazed at how far you've come and the habits you have managed to change.
To help get you started we have designed a simple 2 page A4 weight loss diary. Simply print it out about 15 times and cut each A4 into 2 pages. Then staple them together... You will now have a month long food and exercise diary. When you've finished, just print more of them off. Now make a pact with yourself to use it! You can download the food diary here...
BEST OF LUCK!
