Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbells...The Perfect Home Exercise Companion?
![]() |
The Bowflex selecttech dumbbells are a new piece of fitness equipment we've recently tried. Tom's dad actually purchased them a while ago and he hasn't been able to get them back from Tom since. These dumbbells offer some excellent advantages for someone who works out at home. |
We don't often promote products but when something good comes along we try to give it a thorough working over and let you know the good the bad and the ugly of it. We've put together this review to let you know what to expect if you do decide to purchase them. We want to make sure that if you're going to buy exercise equipment then it is good quality stuff.
If you do decide to purchase the Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbells we've put together a great workout routine that you can use them for. There's also other dumbbell exercises dotted throughout the site which you'll find if you have a look around...
The Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbells Review
These dumbbells have got a very clever design which allows you to change the weight that you're using just by turning a dial. They turned out to be very handy for doing workouts at home because they have got all the weights you need in one small package. They have pretty much replaced all the dumbbells that we used to workout with. The old ones are just sitting in the garage now doing nothing...
They are very good for when you need to change weights fast. Shaye found them very useful for doing her specialty, quick 10 minute workouts. She's a gal that doesn't like to waste time.
We also found them quite good for partner workouts, which we often do. If one person is stronger than the other then you don't need a whole different set of weights to keep both people happy.
The weights range from 5-52.5 lbs (2.5-24 kgs) This lower weight range is good if you're just beginning to workout at home or if you're looking to exercise your smaller muscle groups. The upper end of the spectrum is actually quite substantial...52.5lbs on each arm is quite a lot... unless you're a muscle man/woman. In fact, Shaye found these weights a little too heavy. It's probably best to keep them in the same place because they're not that easy to move.
When you compare these dumbbells to the weights that we used to use... (A mixture of kg's, lb's and bars with different weights). It kinda made it hard to know how much you were lifting. With these, all you have to do is remember the number you were doing the exercise on last time and see if you can beat it. Pretty easy really. Good for tracking your progress.
A downside to these dumbbells is that they are a little pricey, going for anywhere up to US$500. It can be a lot of money to part with at once. They're built solidly though and are the sort of thing that you'll use for the rest of your life.
Overall though, we think these dumbbells are very good value. If you're serious about resistance training they're definitely a good option to consider. Even though Tom didn't have to pay for his he definitely would because they make workouts a lot more "to the point" as Shaye would say.
Bowflex selecttech dumbells have heaps of really cool things about them but they're not ideal for everyone. We've summarised the pro's and con's for you so you can make an informed decision about whether they're right for you.

Things That You Should Look Out For |
|
They're not particularly easy to move. It's best if you keep them in your set workout area. |
|
If you are super strong and you lift over 52.5lbs (24kgs) per arm... Then these dumbbells aren't for you. |
|
If you can't see yourself ever using weights that are much heavier than a few lbs then it's probably a bit of a waste of money investing in these. |
