Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbells - The Smart Persons Way To Get Sexy At Home

bowflex dumbbottlesSince that time I first tried the Bowflex Selecttech Dumbbells a few years back, I have fallen in love with them.

I now use them pretty much every single workout I do at home.

These dumbbells are compact, easy to use and have a clever design.

So clever that I think they should be renamed cleverbells :)

Read on to discover why I think that the bowflex selecttech dumbbells are so well suited to fitness training at home...

Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbells - An Entire Set Of Dumbbells In One

bowflex selecttech dumbbells exerciseDang those are some fancy looking dumbbells! And there's a good reason for it too.

Can you see the dials at each end? Those dials are where the magic happens. They allow you to select how heavy you'd like the dumbbell to be.

So for example, when I want to do bicep curls I turn the dial up to 16kg.

When I'm finished my sets of those, I'll dial up 20kgs for my 2 arm squat swings.

Abracadabra...Simple as that!

This awesome feature eliminates the need for entire sets of dumbbells, which are not only expensive, they take up heaps of room.

My favorite thing about the bowflex selecttech dumbbells is...

If you're a regular reader of FTAH, you'll know that I like to workout with friends. You'll also know that I like to keep my workouts short, hard and focussed.

The bowflex selecttech dumbbells are perfectly suited to partner workouts.

Shaye, being a girl, is not as strong as I am - although she's still very strong! So, naturally, when we workout together, we want to use different weights.

We normally alternate who is using the weights. When it's my turn I'll dial up a heavier weight. When it's Shaye's turn, she dials it down again. This suits us nicely because it keeps the rest times down and our workouts fast and focussed!

Another great thing is the size of the dumbbells. I know they say size doesn't matter, BUT!...

When it comes to home fitness equipment, size matters plenty!

I keep my bowflex selecttech dumbbells on a small table in the corner of my home gym. They're nice and compact and don't clutter up the room at all. Compared to some racks of dumbbells I've seen before, these things are like David to Goliath

There's 2 different varieties, which one is best?

There's 2 different varieties of bowflex selecttech dumbbells. The 552 and 1090.

  • The bowflex 552's range from 5 to 52.5lbs (2 to 24kg) on each dumbbell.
  • The bowflex 1090's range from 10 to 90 lbs (4.5 to 41 kg) on each dumbbell.

I have the bowflex 552's at home and I can honestly say they have served me well. They are more than sufficient for beginner to intermediate training... But if you're planning to get seriously fit and sexy at home - which I hope you are :) - I'd go for the 1090's.

You see, I'm starting to reach the upper limits of weight on the 552's (especially for the leg exercises) and I wish I had some more. The bowflex 1090's are fairly heavy and would last me pretty much forever.

Disadvantages of The Bowflex Selecttech Dumbbells

The bowflex "skeleton"

These dumbbells are really good for MOST exercises. But there is one situation where they aren't ideal...

You see, these dumbbells are like a skeleton. When you dial the weight right down, all of the weight plates detach and you're just left with bare-naked bones. The problem is, this skeleton is the same length whether you've got 2kg's or 20kg's dialled in.

So if you're doing exercises that use a light weight you still have to hold onto the bulky skeleton.

For example, sometimes we do boxing whilst holding dumbbells. In this situation, it is easier to use smaller dumbbells so you don't hit yourself in the face.

You Don't Have To Be Rich To Have A Full Set Of Dumbbells

Depending on which way you look at it, these might seem quite expensive or they might seem quite cheap. Sure they are a lot to spend on one piece of equipment... But when you consider that they replace a entire set of dumbbells, they're incredibly good value.

I personally think they're well worth the price because I use them almost every day. If you're serious about training at home, I assure you they're a buy you won't regret!
