Chilis - The Amazing Benefits of These Little Power Packs!

We have always been a fan of chilis. Their delicious and spicy taste is a welcome addition to any meal. It was only as we grew older (and wiser... we hope!) that we realised that their benefits extend far beyond their taste...

It all started with Shaye wondering why her dad (who is nearing 60) never got sick...

Why did he never came down with the flu? Why did he always have energy to burn and how had he managed to avoid all major conditions and illnesses throughout his life.

He ate exactly as Shaye's mother did, besides one thing... He packed chilis onto every single meal he had (besides breakfast!!). In fact, he would often boast about being able to eat the hottest varieties (which he grew in his back yard) without a problem. He would boast about eating up to 8 of them a day... 2 with every meal and snack.

Yes, we agree, that is slightly odd... Perhaps he is addicted to them. But who cares - it works wonders for him!

Shaye, after realizing this, began taking a chili a day. She can't eat her dads hottest ones, so she downs them with a glass of water. A bit like a chili-pill!

And the result... Shaye is a healthy, happy, high energy chick.. who never gets sick. Coincidence...? We don't think so!

In countries where where hot peppers and chili are eaten often in the diet (such as India) there are much lower rates of heart attack, stroke and blockage of the pulmonary arteries (pulmonary embolism) compared to western countries where spicy food isn't as widely eaten.

They increase the level of endorphins in your body. These endorphins create a temporary "high" - perhaps this is why Shaye's dad just can't get enough of them!

They aid your metabolism and get your body burning energy faster. Some studies show that eating them with your dinner can temporarily increase digestion by 20%!

They're just chocka block full of Capsaicin, a wonderful compound which has been found to help alleviate pain associated with arthritis (Tom realized this first hand!) menstrual pain (okay, Tom hasn't experienced this one!) and headaches.

They lower cholesterol levels in your blood, triglyceride levels and platelet aggregation. They also lower the chances that you will get blood clots forming!

Eating them straight, or drinking a spicy drink, helps to clear mucus from your from your nose and lungs when you are sick. The Capsaicin in them is similar to the active ingredient in cold remedies. The difference is, Capsaicin is natural and works much quicker!

They have a high content of beta-carotene. This helps to boost your immune system and fight off nasties that could make you sick!

They actually help to PREVENT Stomach ulcers! Despite rumors or myths which tell the opposite. Just because they are spicy doesn't mean they are damaging your tummy. Exactly the opposite is true!

 

Growing your own chili bush is actually really easy... We have an almost constant supply of them for at least 6 months of the year! There are only 3 small bushes, but they produce more than any other fruit or vegetable plant in the garden!

So, if ever there was a time to get spicy it's now... Get growing and get eating!
