Max Heart Beat Alllowed

by uttm singh
(patna. India)

My age is 38 and I weigh 66 kg. I spend about 30 minutes on the treadmill. What are the parameters suggesting I am not overdoing it. My heart beat is in the range of 160 per/min when running at a speed of 11 KMPH.

You need to be in your target heart rate range
by: Tom

Hi Uttm,

There is a range of heart rates which you should be within when you do aerobic exercise.

Generally it is about 60-80% of your maximum heart rate. (MHR) But some people go further, 85% and even 90%.

If you are 38 years old then your theoretical maximum heart rate is 220-38 = 182bpm

You said that when you were exercising your heart rate was around 160bpm... That is around 88% of your maximum.

This sounds like very intense exercise to me. You're probably getting rather close to the top of your limit. I imagine it's probably quite hard to sustain exercise at that pace for long...

But if you're managing it then well done. You should certainly be making some good gains in your fitness at that rate. If your body is in good enough condition to handle that sort of training then that's fantastic.

The bottom line is, as always, just listen to your body. If you find your performance declining from workout to workout then you're probably overtraining. Perhaps scale back a bit and lower your heart rate to something more sustainable.

Cheers
Tom
