Neck Stretching For Dummies

We're going to show you some really simple and effective neck stretching exercises. If you do them once a day you will definitely feel less tense.

When people get stressed out they tend to scrunch up their shoulders and neck muscles. Unfortunately, once the stress has gone, these muscles stay tensed up. The first thing you need to do to get rid of this tension is become fully aware of it and then consciously relax your muscles. After you've done that, you can get into some neck stretching and it will be much more effective.

Now, we're asking you to do something for yourself. After you've finished looking through Fitness-Training-at-Home.com, leave the computer. Go to a quiet place and close your eyes. Give yourself 10 minutes to just relax those muscles. Breathe deeply 10 times and then start to stretch your muscles out. Do some neck stretches and some shoulder stretches. You should feel that tension release. If it doesn't, come back again the next day and do it again.

Neck and Back Stretch

This stretches your neck, shoulders and back. It's great for targeting multiple areas which makes it a time efficient stretch.

  1. Get onto a soft mat, a yoga mat is perfect.
  2. Lie on your back.
  3. Bend your knees to 90 degrees.
  4. Raise your feet and back all the way onto the floor behind you.
  5. Try get as far as you can.
  6. Aim at the bizarre position in the photo!
  7. Support your back with your hands.
  8. Remember, you don't have to get too far on your first try.
  9. Hold for 20+ seconds.
  10. Repeat this 2-3 times

 

 

Simple Set

Simple neck stretch stage 1

This stretch is really great for beginners and advanced stretchers alike. It is very straight forward and directly targets the neck.

  1. Kneel onto a yoga mat, or soft surface.
  2. Relax your eyes.
  3. Gently stretch your neck to one side using your hand.
  4. Hold for 20 seconds.
  5. Change sides and then repeat.

Simple neck stretch stage 2.

  1. Kneel onto a yoga mat, or soft surface.
  2. Relax your eyes.
  3. Gently stretch lower your head behind you.
  4. Hold for 20 seconds.
  5. Repeat 2-3 times.

Simple neck stretch stage 3.

  1. Kneel onto a yoga mat, or soft surface.
  2. Relax your eyes.
  3. Gently stretch your head in front of you.
  4. Make sure you keep your back straight.
  5. Hold for 20 seconds.
  6. Repeat 2-3 times.

Heels Over Head

This stretch not only stretches your neck, but your shoulders and back too. It's perfect for those who hate to waste time. This is a great stetch for really loosening up your entire neck and back area.

Note for the ladies: Please do not do this stretch if you are menstruating.

  1. Get onto a yoga mat or something relatively soft.
  2. Lie on your back.
  3. Raise your feet and back all the way onto the floor behind you.
  4. Support your back with your hands.
  5. Hold for 20+ seconds.
  6. Repeat this 2-3 times.
