When to eat - before or after a workout

by Melissa

What is the best way to optimize my workout with proper eating habits? I have heard that you shouldn't waste your workout by eating an hour before or after your workout. Is that true?

WHEN AND WHEN NOT TOO EAT
by: Anonymous

From the question I would think you are a calorie counter :) Exercise burns calories and if you are looking to burn fat then you will need to create a calorie deficit of avoid carbs. The body can perform perfectly if not better without carbs, I say this dont go too far in avoiding them, a carrot cant hurt you.

Eating a hour before is fine. If your training involves resistance then it is essential to get some protein (25-45 grams) on top of your after work out meal and get this protein in quick so your body can start repairs and building.

If your workout is more cardio oriented then it does not make a difference. Your body will start to mobilize fat for fuel whether you have eatedn an hour before or not as elevated heart rate has this effect. I wouldnt eat to soon after as this will stop the afterburn, maybe 30-45 mins.

Eat more work out more rather eat less and workout less.
